Four rocks

I Have been on vacation for a little while in Maine. The sea air the calm days and the fog have allowed many thoughts to come forth and my mind to clear some what. Before I start blogging about starting my search for a slave I will relate a story one that was told to me while sitting out at a lighthouse 7/8 of mile out in the ocean with only man made ten foot wide rocky bridge as it's only access.

It had intrigued me as why would any one build the bridge to put a lighthouse on it and that there are weather warnings about being out on the bridge and the light house in inclement weather. A few had been struck by lightning and others swept away out to sea. So of course seeing warnings such as that I had to go out and see this lighthouse. The day was a bit foggy and there was a mist hindering the view of the lighthouse from shore . The journey out was not easy as the bridge was not flat but large stones laid down so it was a bit of flat rock climbing With deep crevices about 6 to 8 inches wide between the stones. Some points of the bridge you feel as if the sea has made tunnels under this stone bridge as your feet feel the force of the waves on the bridge. On one side of the bridge an old ship . A few fishermen near that point heard me question out loud the name of the ship and could not resist telling me their version of the story of the bridge

Well it seems that a fisherman built the bridge. The reason was that he heard a song coming from the sea from the first rock. He had almost lost his life in a storm so was a bit fearful of the sea now. He did not want to go out in a ship nor boat but the song lured him back everyday trying to see what was out there on the first rock. That is how the bridge started he put a rock in the water to stand on then another and another until his bridge nearly reached the first rock. Lighting a fire in the early morn he saw what he thought was a women in the water behind the rock. As she sang she turned and once catching a glimpse of him submerge. Sadden by what he thought were old sea eyes he went home to return the next day again the song was there but distant it was coming from the second rock. Of course you can see where this is going every time he made his bridge out to the next rock the song would change to the next one further out. Until the forth rock. Seven eights of a mile out I am told is a drastic drop in the ocean floor. By now his bridge was of a concern to shipping so he built a light house at seven eights of a mile Every night he would light the lamp and sit on high in the light house waiting to hear the song and perhaps catch a glimpse of the shadowy figure that hid behind the rock and in the seaweed. No song no sighting since he had been there .

A large storm with high waves and fierce winds had struck the area as he sat there in the light house he heard the song once again and there she was in the flashes of lighting staring at the man behind the glass . The fisherman left the e safety of the lighthouse and stood at the very furthest rock of the the bridge he had built at least that is the supposition. The fisherman was never seen again the light house was found with the doors open and windows broken .

Some say he was lured by the witch of the bay and that she needed him to be in deep water before she could capture him. She had used her song to lure him out to the sea, Others say it was an inquiring mermaid that forbidden love caused the demise of the man. Most just want to say it was a bad storm that is all. Those that say that though cannot explain a few things . The windows and doors are now boarded up because whenever they restore the windows to the building they mysteriously break in the night. There is an old ship half way along the bridge that suddenly appeared after the fisherman disappeared. It sits on a sand bar no one knows the name nor what happened to it a few suppose it could be the fisherman's ship the one he almost perished aboard. Now I stood at the the last rock where he had and I felt a draw to take the next step I felt a breeze and calmness out there the song might have been just the lapping of the waves that is what it sounded like to me and the rocks are there but I did not see any forms lurking about just some seaweed just under the surface of the water near the last rock.

I guess his love of the sea or at least his addiction to it was too great and he had to find a way of returning to it. On that note it is time for me to return to or star searching for a new slave I guess I too miss the song of my sea.
