A strange thing we humans are. To hear hundred people were killed in a wave or 80 killed in a hurricane seems not to affect us as one shot on a freeway. We stop traffic have vigils leave flowers for the one. The hundred we bury quickly . We grieve over children shot in a school yet ten times the same number die from starvation in the world every day do we build flower shrines where they fell?

I do not feel much difference, as some do , in the hundred or the one as I do not know them. I have not seen them grow as children ,no conversations has gone one over the years between myself and them. I hold nothing in common with them except that we exist on the same planet, we are made of the same stuff.

They are of little consequence to me as they do not share my views hopes and desires they had their own based on their lives and experiences. It would be like saying that I care if they were life-stylers or vanillas . Is it simply because I do not know them that cause my lack of human feeling for them. Why must so must news and stories revolve on the one and not the hundred. Would I care anymore if it did I doubt it.

I feel empathy at most when I see a single child ravaged by a storm , war or poverty yet if I see 300 bodies floating in the ocean no sadness wells up inside of me .

If I am so cold towards my own species then why do I feel inadequate in my help when I cannot stop a dove crying out in pain?
